Workshop with Harmony Slater & Russell Case
From July 12th to July 14th 2019

DESCRIPTION
This workshop will be suitable for all types and levels of students and not necessarily only Ashtanga students. For the Mysore practice a minimum amount of experience and knowledge of the first series is required.

Harmony Slater has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga for two decades. She first journeyed to Mysore in 2004 to study with the Jois family. She first received Authorization to teach this method in 2006, directly from Sri. K Pattabhi Jois, and nine years later received Certification from Sharath Jois. She is one of less than 20 women in the world to hold this honor.

Harmony is a strong presence in the Ashtanga community worldwide. She founded two Yoga Schools in Canada, and in addition to her teaching, she has shared her experiences with the practice, pregnancy and childbirth in the books: Yoga Sadhana for Mothers and Strength and Grace: A collection of Essays by Women of Ashtanga Yoga. She has a wealth of knowledge to offer students, and openly shares her insights about experiencing the full integration of Ashtanga Yoga during her workshops.

She will be assisted by Russell Case, who has been practising and teaching Ashtanga yoga for more than 25 years. A humble and refined teacher, he was given Authorization by Sri K Pattabhi Jois in 2005. Case is known for his joking spirit, and his perpetual eye toward social justice work. When Pattabhi Jois invited him to his pranayama class in 2007, he considered this distinction to be the highest grade.

Program Schedule Friday 12th:

09:00 – 11:00 Mysore practice
(For the Mysore practice a minimum amount of experience and knowledge of the first series is required)

18:30 – 20:30 Sadhana - Cultivating a spiritual practice in the Modern World
In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali gives us three essential components to Sadhana that address issues arising in the body, mind and spirit. Using the Sutras as a guide, we will see how these ancient techniques are related to current practices of yoga.

(For the Mysore practice a minimum amount of experience and knowledge of the first series is required)

12:30 – 14:30 Handstands & Bandhas
Learning to balance on your hands begins right from the first sun-salutation. If you want to start to build up the strength through the arms and core to practice handstands, the foundations are found right in the postures of primary series and learning to engage specific energetic locks.

16:00 – 18:00 Philosophy – Yoga Sutra Study
We will explore the foundational philosophy of Yoga from Patanjali Yoga Sutras, and discuss how the practice of ashtanga yoga is rooted in this philosophy.

Sunday 14th:

(For the Mysore practice a minimum amount of experience and knowledge of the first series is required)

12:30 – 14:30 Fundamentals for a pain free backbend
We will look at what is Yoga Chikitsa & Nadi Shodana and how we can purify our energy channels.
We will explore some back-bending enhancements: looking at the principles of opening the heart and strengthening the legs.

16:00 – 18:00 Ashtanga yoga as a mirror for self study & questions
The Yamas and Niyamas give us a frame work for cultivating a spiritual practice. This is an opportunity for students to learn more about how to use the practice as a tool for transformation. This workshop will address difficult questions that come up during times of struggle or stagnation in the practice. Feel free to bring your tough questions!
